A Brief History of Dapps

Dapps, or decentralized applications, have been around since 2015 when the first Dapp was launched on the Ethereum blockchain. Since then, Dapps have exploded in popularity: Today, there are nearly 3,000 Dapps on Ethereum alone!

It all started in 2014, when a groundbreaking paper was released by industry experts and focused on developing a framework for building a decentralized internet of the future (today, commonly referred to as Web3). According to the vision captured in this initial paper, Dapps must:

  • Run on open-source code and work without third-party intervention.

  • Store all data in a transparent way that is publicly accessible over blockchain networks. The data itself should be stored in a decentralized fashion.

  • Dapps should have a crypto token at their core in order to reward users.

  • Dapps must use a consensus method to generate tokens, eg. through Proof of Work, or Proof of Stake.

There are almost 3,000 different Dapps hosted on Ethereum, proposing utility across many use cases, including Dapp browsers, Ethereum gaming with the play-to-earn model, buying NFTs and even the ability to deposit crypto assets into pools or protocols to earn passive yield.
